Just went to fill up at a local Shell.

Regular unleaded 113.9 cents
V Power (98 octane) 123.9 cents
V Power (100 octane with 5% ethanol) 154.9 cents

WTF!!!!!!

So I asked him what drugs they were on when they set the price because they cant be serious asking 32 cents a litre more for 2 octane points and with 5% ethanol....

Some guy in afganawherefuckeneva knocked over a 44g of ethanol on sunday and the knock on effect means that we have to pay more at the pump.

Dont you listen to the news? :P

yeah i thought about using the 100ron too, but that price sorta put me off. it is probably cheaper to fill up with normal v-power AND put a bottle of octane boost in!

I saw that down in Canberra on the weekend,as one place I filled up down there was the first servo I've been to that's stocked the V power extreme.
I agree that the 20c/L premium for the extra 'potential' is a bit rich,no pun intended.

I'd love the extra headroom the higher octane offers, but both the 'extreme' price, and the inclusion of ethanol into the mix rules it out for me. 98 octane fuel is expensive enough as it is,and I refuse to put ethanol in any concentration into my cars.

yeah thats a shyte price to pay, i have been off the roads with a lack of licence for the last 3 months, (ran out of points) and so haven;t bought fuel in that time, and now i can tell you i notice the difference!

Meanwhile, on the topic of ethanol, and I KNOW there will be debate on this, but the ideal ethanol/fuel mix for Australian conditions is about 15 to 20%. Its cleaner burning and better for your engine. Fuel in Germany is mixed with almost 30% ethanol in places bacause of the climate there. I learnt this from a mate's dad who is in the fuel business, swears by ethanol in his porsche, and i assume he would know.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the octane level of fuel in japan 100, with like.. 105 RON as the premium unleaded, and so all those with imports, will have a better time of it on the top grade fuel, as opposed to AUS ones which will have been tuned to the 98 octane we get on average?

Thats what I said to the attendent, I said "who would be stupid enough to buy it when you have octane booster sitting on the shelf"
Him: "blah blah blah the people who put it in set the price..."
Me: "Well your not going to sell any of it at those prices"

thing is some dopey rich shit who never looks at the bowser price will pick up the handset and fill the car without even looking and they wind up making a killer profit.

just remember that octane booster will be lucky to get you one point extra.
If you read the fine print, most of them don't do much from an octane point of view.

I was pleasantly surprised on monday when I filled up at Shell. V Power was only 6c per litre more than regular unleaded. Usually it's around 12c.

...except if your engine and fuel lines are composed of things that ethanol tends to rot. Like most Nissan engines pre-2003....which is about 99% of the userbase on this forum.

Ethanol also contains less energy, per unit volume, than petrol.
