see if you can move the compressor (and exhaust) wheels in and out and side to side and make sure it spins nice and smoothly

there should be a tiny bit of movement there (mainly side to side AFAIK) but too much could mean problems later down the track.

if in doubt, get it checked out by a pro

i jus got the turbo today but theres not much shaftplay according to zei's instructions

now call me worried but im trying to jus test it out.. (new to this stuff)
supposedly when i spin either wheels, it's supposed to spin on its own as its ball bearing but it seems pretty tough to move.. ie i gotta keep pushing it to spin..

whast the go here?

as said on msn james, i think the best bet is to get it checked out by a turbo specialist to see if theres anything wrong and should be replaced now while its off instead when its on the car at a later stage.

Sounds like it has had moisture / water in it which has resulted in rust / build up not allowing it to spin. Trying to spin the thing without removing the gunk is only going to cause more damage. Time for it to come apart and be looked at by a pro like the others have said.

Having said that I am still interested / curious in how much free play a turbo should have in it. I tried moving the shaft on my new turbo side to side and it had a lot more free play then I would have expected.

I would have though the tolerences on a ball bearing turbo would have been fairly tight considering it has ball bearings not a sleave style clearence.

Without a properly setup dial indicator it is really hard to say but I would guessed that there might be close to 1 mm side movement in it.

When I got my turbo, there was no shaft play at all, the blades would not move from side to side, now in/out.

Mine was also brand new, never seen the heat of an exhaust, nor been under the imense pressures of what a turbo goes through, so it was pretty much a virgin, nice and tight.

Having said that, when I spun the wheels, they would continue to spin for about 10 seconds after I let go, it is also a ball bearing turbo.

Will the oil take up any of that side play?

I must have been on drugs (it's an expression, I don't do drugs) the day I checked that shaft play because I pulled off the compressor housing last night and the side to side movement would be about .2mm no where near the 1mm I thought it had.

i had these issues with buying 2nd hand turbos.... for future reference:

most importantly.... make sure its easy to spin.. it doesnt have to spin like a nut on its own if it isnt BB but it should spin easy.

for shaft play what you should do is put ur thumbs on the bolts on the front and rear fans.. then try push them in and out and see if it moves.. in and out movement is the one to watch out for..

then try up and down force one up and one down, if its a roller bearing turbo a little bit of movement is expected, garrett (around the corner from my house) say up to 1 mm is acceptable, if its a ball bearing turbo movement is worrying yet not the end of the world.

give it a go, and if in doubt..... walk into garrett and ask them to giv it a jiggle for ya... damn that sounds gay lmao

goodluck bro
