Not overly legal in NSW either but i see its merits.

Police Scanners are quite legal, you can get the damn things from your local Dicksmith store.

My 2M Radio can listen to police frequencies... and its from Dicksmith... so its definately legal.. I know for my one you need a license (ameteur radio).

The thing with police scanners is that its illegal to have them playing in public... i.e. sitting at a location and having it on full volume for everyone to hear.

Scanners are ok, but if they are 2 way and you talk on their frequency then your f***ed.

many of the frequencies will become digital soon, some already are i think such as Parramatta (anyone confirm?) which means the scanners you get today won't be able to listen in on them....

Yeah they are going digital... and the radio's they use will cost like $3,000+, they are moving for many reasons... one of which is so that people can't AFFORD to listen to them cause the scanners are too expensive (but legal).
