Post subject:  gaskets, which way around? or does it not matter...

WARNING: This -is- a noob question =) .. i'm putting on a new exhaust manifold, turbo and dump, and wanted to know which way around to put the gaskets.

i.e. when they have their holes punched into them one side of the gasket is totally flat with "sharp" edges, and the other has "rounded off" edges - does it matter which way around i put them? (like, "flat side on block, rounded side on manifold, you get my gist) What is the general consensus??

It doesn't really matter as once it's all torqued up they will be flatened anyway :)

Most will only go on one way anyway. The turbo to dump for one. Some of the head to manifold gaskets will appear to fit either way but they have tabs that foul on the front of the head if backways (the multi layer metal ones do anyway).

Post subject:  gasket quality.

thanks for the response badhairdave, I figured it wouldnt matter but have never done it before so thought i'd draw on the experience of some people that had.

The gaskets in question were the manifold<->head gasket and the turbo<->manifold gasket which in my case are reversible.

Which leads me to a follow-up question - the original turbo<->manifold gasket is all metal, the one i've been supplied looks like its layers of metal on the outside and compressed gasket paper or something inside - just wtf is up with that, is this style of gasket going to last long on a turbo-manifold application or would it be better to buy a new one from mr.nissan? I want to do this once, properly, and not have to worry about it for a while =)

Do it once do it properly with genuine Nissan gaskets. It will save you a lot of headache down the line.

Ok, so nissan is where the quality is for these gaskets yeah? - how much did it cost you when you replaced yours from nissan, reasonable or rapage? and available over the counter or wait-time...(for a t25)

do you know if one can buy turbo gaskets individually or is it a kit?

Cheers,

Gaskets are all available individually and some dealers keep them in stock. If not they are always in the sydney warehouse and they will have them the same day if you order before 11:30.

Pricing is not to bad. Retail from memory is 60 for head to manifold, 45 for turbo to manifold and 50 for turbo to dump.

Dont quote me those are rough off my head figures

Another thing to add to the life of these gaskets is having a braket somewhere near your cat. to the chasis. Some cars have them, some don't.

If you havn't got one I'd recomend making something up as it'll take alot of pressure off the manifold gaskets and minimise movement.

the 180/s13 ones are cheaper than the s15 ones from factory i think.... s15 ones are 7 layer metal and retail for about $150.... i'm pretty certain you can re-use the stock one... i've got a few gaskgets laying around if your interested in purchasing, pm me :)
