Car: 1993 180SX (sr20), S15 on its way
I was under the impression that the S15 had a ball bearing turbo.

Someone was trying to convince me that the Aus spec S15 did not have a full ball bearing turbo (Only the exhaust housing part of the turbo was ball bearing?). According to him only the Jap Spec S15 was full ball bearing.

Is this true? I tried looking up on the net but didnt have any luck.

Thanks

There is a mix, some are bb, most are non bb, none are "half" bb or whatever some muppet is telling you.

best thing to do is look on the id tag on the centre housing of the turbo, the third number (on the bottom) is the CHRA number. 446541 is bb, 466543 is non bb.

Can someone confirm this also..
I have also been told that you can also define the turbo via Year model of the car.
late 1999 to Early 2001 it was BB & anything afterwards is non.
Is this true?

See if we can iron out some of the S15 turbo myth.

For every rule I've tried to figure out I've seen inconsistancies so now I just don't try. That's why I simply look at the CHRA number, then you know absolutely for sure no debate exactly what it is.

omg this topic is on again lol

According to Yellow15, Nissansilvia.co.nz

Quote:
Turbo
Jap PS13: 14411-50F00 (non BB)

AU/NZ S14/CS14: 14411-75F00 (non BB?)

Jap S14: 14411-69F00 (non BB?)
Jap CS14: 14411-82F01 (BB?)
Jap Autech/NISMO 270R: 14411-RP801 (BB, same turbo as early S15 MT but different part no)

Jap/NZ S15 early: 14411-91F00 MT (BB) and 14411-69F00 AT (non BB?, same as Jap S14)
Jap/NZ/Au S15 late: 14411-75F00 (non BB?, same as NZ S14 and same for both Auto and manual)

Injectors
Jap PS13: 16600-50F00 16600-50F10 (manufacturer difference) (370cc)

Jap S14: 16600-21U00 (s/s 16600-21U01) (370cc)
Jap CS14: 16600-91F00 (480cc)
NISMO 270R: 16600-04500 (s/s 16600-91F00)

Jap/NZ/AU S15 MT 16600-91F00 (480cc)
Jap/NZ/AU S15 AT 16600-21U01 (370cc)

*BB: Ball bearing turbo
*S15 early: (99.01->00.10)
*S15 late: (00.10 -> End of production for NZ, Jap S15s, and all AU S15s)
*s/s: Substituted number (don't know whether it means just a part no change or it means a similar part that can be used to replace the original part)

So in summary, after some relaible source from Jap + confirmed by two local nissan dealer, what we found so far :
1.The turbo of the Jap/NZ (and all AU) is changed to the AU/NZ S14 (non BB?) one from 10/2000. And according to Newmarket Nissan, it won't affect the performance of the car as a different boost and ECU mapping is used.
2. The early automatic S15 got the same turbo and injectors as the Jap S14.
3.The AU S15 is the same as the late Jap/NZ S15 engine wise.

Thats the thing, I've seen exceptions to the rules listed there

Like I said, instead of relying on some rule simply check the turbo yourself then it doesn't matter what is said on the internet, you know for sure.

Yep. If the turbo is on the car the best thing to do is put it up on a hoist and use a mirror/torch. Hmm, hard to explain but basically the id plate will be sitting on the centre housing pointed towards the engine facing up slightly so if you use one of those tilting mirrors on a stick you put it between the turbo and engine facing down a bit. It's the sort of thing where after you've done it once it's very quick and easy to do on the next car

LOL

Good luck reading the CHRA tag, I had difficulties reading it when the turbo was out.

what is the problem with BB or non-BB turbo?

proformance wise is much the same, u dont get 20kw more than non-BB
both rated @ 200~200kw max, with factory BB turbo u wont get 240kw!

spool faster hmm maybe? who knows

With BB cant you run more boost without the turbo wearing out and faster spool up? Where as a non BB has more wear and tear.
Correct me if I am wrong thanks.

So what you guys are saying is that theres no pattern to which models are BB and non BB?

E.g a 2001 model can be BB or Non BB??

Does this mean that Jap Spec S15s can also be non BB?

yes correct!, but hmmm BB turbo has a longer life for sure but How long?Higher Boost = Turbo die faster not metter BB or non-BB.
why nissan change the BB to non-BB turbo on the s15? not just to cut down the production, i guess they will last long enough
even some good aftermarket turbos are non-BB and good output
