Since I have to take off the dump pipe to fit the CES pipe (should be here later this week) I figure now would be a good time to change the exhaust manifold.

The guy I am getting the dump pipe from is offering to sell me a low k SSA manifold for $300 I have just done a quick google search and they seem fairly ordinary. Are there any quility manifold without paying crazy prices?

Nope, everything thats cheap is going to be ordinary.

However my experiance with SS autochrome manifolds esspecially the latter ones is that they are pretty good for the price.

The problem is there are so many copied getting around that people just assume they have a SS manifold and when it cracks they blame SS even though its not one of their manifolds.

I have used them and know of several people whom have done the same without any real dramas.

Do you think it is worth the extra dollars going for a setup like the one you have?

The set-up I have is completely different to what you have or would be using.

Im running a larger externally gated turbo.

My manifold is steem pipe steel which is a lot better material in my opinion to make a manifold from, the only down side is that you can't easily make it look pretty like the range od stainless manifolds doing the rounds.

I don't know of any off the shelf local manifolds made from steem pipe though. A custom one would set you back around $6-700 normally.

Down the track I do want to change turbos but it is likely to be only a T28 or similar. Is it worth getting a steem pipe one made up for that turbo or do I go the cheapy?

For what you want stick with a genuine SS manifold and everything will be fine.

I was thinking last night because I will be running LPG which will more than likely run a hotter exhaust temp will the SSA cope with the extra temp?

Okay LPG on an SR20 is not a good idea at all.

Im not saying that because they are turbo either.
I say that beacause they have massive problems with vaves being smashed into seats, rings glazing bores and wearing ridiculously fast due to their very thin nature.
Also they have sodium filled exhaust valves which are great for controlling valve head temperatures but make a monsterous mess when the head of the vave comes off.
The normal problem with LPG is that it wears valve guides however on an SR and most nissan engines LPG will wear valve stems instead for some odd reason. Let it get to bad and obviously the valve will break.

The manifold should be okay with the extra temp but you may want to get it HPC coated to prevent the heat radiating.

One piece stainless exhaust valves (Manley or similar) should take care of any valve problems and if need to line the block I guess I will just need to deal with that one as it happens. Generally gas tends to produce less bore wear due to the fact that it is not a wet fuel like petrol but I am very familiar with valve / seat recession on some cars.

no offense, but can i ask why ur changing to lpg? is it entirely due to running costs or other ideas, because i can see it being a real hassle. or are u just unconventional :D

A bit of both really... I have always wanted to run a LPG car, running costs and RON have always been big incentives. I figure I can go crazy on the engine and still affort to run it. Plus I like to be different.

Risking do you have contact details for the mob who made your manifold I would like to sus out the costs first and make a decision from there.

Ask to speak with greg and just let him know that brad refered you to him.

Very neat work and in a good time frame as well.

running costs: factor in the price of the conversion to your fuel bill as it stands now. it'll take at least a year and quite likely two before you even balance up,much less start saving money.

performance: if you're going normal style mixers you won't have anywhere near the kind of fine tuning ability and throttle response that you do now with the EFI. bear in mind that you're basically going back to carbies. there's a good chance the car will be worse to drive afterwards.

engine durability:as risking has said, there's a good chance you'll destroy the cylinder head. you're going to need to beef up the cooling system, and totally rebuild the engine, with a LOT of attention paid to the head. there's a few more grand gone.

is LPG still looking attractive?

it's fine for taxis and NA fleet cars, but in a performance application like this, don't waste your time and money.
