Its a resonate noise that you tend to get from cheap, ill baffled exhausts.

Its a constant low noise from the exhaust when you are on light throttle along the free way etc.

Ever noticed when following a charade or something they are excessivly loud when at cruising speeds? Thats dronning.

and to make matters worse, it resonated inside the cabin space and make a booming sound while you are driving. it will get extremely annoying and give you a headache

the overwhelming boomy, dirty sound that you get at low revs. To me its kind of like a constant, non deep, hollow fart arse sound

Get an empty Milo can or something similar in size.

Place the opening in front of your face and make a monotonic exhaust noise.

Now repeat with a bucket over your head. :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Similarly when your gf\wife is talking to u and you're trying to watch Tv\Computer\Eat, etcetc....

Uh-huh, yes dear.....

[pause]

Yep, mmmmm......

[pause & nod]

You're right about that.

[nod, look at cleavage\booty depending on orientation]

Yea... I know how u feel honey...

Repeat over & over while thinking about sex.

My sil makes a bit of a droning noise when cruising along, but i guess you get a little of that.

A poorly designed exhaust also tends to promote dronning.

my mates charade was the worst, the droning was the opposite frequency of his sub woofer, so when we went through the harbour tunnel the reflected waveforms would cancel each other out, and where there should have been a bass kick, there was nothing. sounded like he was quickly stepping on and off the gas.
Used to freak me out on the way home after an all nighter.

Droning can be a source of entertainment too. My 280ZX sounded like an idling Dash-8 when in a confined space at low revs, e.g. carparks. I used to have a chuckle at being followed around by a trail of false-triggered car alarms 8)

Real droning is when you're going down hill and the droning of the exhaust makes that pulsing sound that hurts your ears like my 180 had. :-?

I would say droning and booming are very similar not in sound but they are both anoying unwanted sounds.

booming is an exhaust generated noise like a sub in your car that rattles the crap out of everything. i.e I had a UC Torana with a SB chev in it, I had the pipes dropped at the extractors for a run down Willow bank. The reverbaration in the car was that bad I was getting a headache with a crash helmet on. It is a frequency that literaly shakes things.

droning is more subtle, it is a frequency (generally from a cheap exhaust) that just plain anoys you. It is more like a harmonic disturbance then a loud booming effect.

both can be loud and both can be as anoying as buggery.
